The idea of manifestation has taken social media by storm in recent years, but does it really work? According to neuroscientist and former medical doctor Dr Tara Swart, the answer is a resounding yes.
Dr Swart, who is also a senior lecturer at MIT Sloan, explained in an interview with The Morning that manifestation is not just about wishful thinking — it’s about rewiring your brain to align with your goals.
According to psychotherapist Malika Chandra, manifestations do bring about more positive outcomes through a psychological pathway. A few theories can help understand this. One of them is neuro-linguistic programming.
“When we start thinking of certain things that we want to achieve, our neural and linguistic pathways, meaning our thoughts and the way that we speak, start aligning with those goals, even subconsciously. And so what that does is that it automatically makes it more likely for that outcome to be achieved,” Chandra explained.
She added that this might also make it easier to pick up cues in your environment that help you learn more about your goal. “So in a lot of small ways, almost like a placebo, yes, manifestations can help you bring your desired goal,” Chandra said
Unlike the common misconception that manifestation is simply about “thinking things into existence,” Dr Swart emphasises the importance of action, mindset shifts, and daily habits. Here are some science-backed techniques she recommends for turning your dreams into reality.
1. Get clear on what you truly want
“Manifestation is basically knowing what you want in life and then doing the things to make it come true in real life,” says Dr Swart.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is setting goals based on societal expectations rather than their desires. Dr Swart stresses that manifestation begins with clarity—you must define your goals based on what truly excites and fulfils you, rather than what others expect.
Try this:
- Journal about your dreams and aspirations.
- Ask yourself: “If success was guaranteed, what would I go after?”
- Visualize your ideal future in detail.
2. Take action—don’t just wish for it
“You can’t just sit on the sofa and think, ‘I want a new husband and a successful business,’ and do nothing. You have to take action,” Dr Swart explained.
Dr Swart debunks the myth that manifestation is purely about thinking positively. While mindset is crucial, it must be paired with action. She advises creating an “action board” rather than a vision board—this means identifying tangible steps toward your goals rather than just imagining them.
Try this:

- Break down your goal into small, manageable steps.
- Take at least one action daily that moves you closer to your dream.
- Surround yourself with environments, people, and habits that support your vision.
3. Shift your mindset from fear to abundance
“Our brain tries to protect us and keep us safe—it doesn’t want us to take risks. You have to think, ‘Actually, it’s safe for me to go out there and take a risk’,” according to Dr Swart.
Your brain is wired for survival, often leading to fear-based thinking that holds you back. Dr Swart recommends rewiring your brain from a scarcity mindset to an abundance mindset to manifest success. This means focusing on opportunities rather than obstacles and believing that there are enough resources for everyone.
Try this:
- Replace thoughts like “I’ll never get this opportunity” with “There is more than enough success for everyone.”
- Visualise yourself as having already achieved your goal and feeling confident in that success.
- Avoid comparing yourself to others—your journey is unique.
4. Train your brain to notice opportunities
“The first step is noticing—when someone tries to talk to you on a plane, do you shut them down? Next time, will you be open to it?”, says Dr Swart.
Dr Swart highlights that your brain filters out information that it deems unimportant. However, when you focus on your goals, you train your brain to notice relevant opportunities. This is known as the Reticular Activating System (RAS), which helps filter information based on what you believe is important.
Try this:

- Write down three opportunities you noticed today that could bring you closer to your goal.
- Be open to unexpected possibilities—sometimes, success comes from the most unexpected places.
- Say “yes” to more experiences that align with your dreams.
5. Start your day with gratitude to stay in a high-vibration state
“Daily gratitude shifts your brain from a state of fear to a state of love and trust, making you more open to opportunities,” says Dr Swart.
Gratitude is a powerful tool in manifestation because it shifts your focus from what’s lacking to what’s already working in your life. This positive mindset creates more confidence, motivation, and openness to success. Dr. Swart even suggests practicing gratitude before opening your eyes in the morning.
Try this:
- Every morning, before getting out of bed, think of three things you’re grateful for.
- Keep a gratitude journal and write down what went well each day.
- Whenever you feel discouraged, shift your focus to something positive in your life.
6. Use affirmations to reinforce a success mindset
“It’s so easy to default to negative thoughts. That’s why I have positive affirmations all around my home—‘I am powerful,’ ‘I am courageous,’ ‘I am a superstar’,” says Dr Swart.
Your subconscious mind absorbs the messages you tell yourself daily. Dr Swart recommends surrounding yourself with positive affirmations to override negative self-talk and reinforce your belief in success.

- Write down five affirmations that align with your goals (e.g., “I am capable of achieving my dreams.”).
- Place them on your mirror, phone, or workspace.
- Repeat them daily with conviction.
Dr. Swart thinks that if you create a vision board,” the worst thing that can happen is that none of it comes true. It won’t harm you—so why not try?”
According to her, manifestation is not magic—it’s neuroscience. Combining a clear vision, daily action, mindset shifts, and gratitude allows you to rewire your brain for success and make your dreams a reality.
