At least seven students were killed and several others were injured in a tragic incident that unfolded in Rajasthan’s Jhalawar, after the roof of Piplodi Primary School collapsed.
According to reports, the students alerted the teachers about pebbles falling; however, the warnings were ignored.
“Pebbles were falling. When the students told the teachers, they scolded them and kept having breakfast. If the children were taken out, the accident would not have happened,” a student told India Today TV.
“The children were made to sit inside the class for prayer. The teachers were having breakfast. When pebbles started falling inside, the children told the teachers. The teachers scolded the children and asked them to sit back in class. After that, the wall gave way and the roof fell on the children. Many children ran here and there to escape, with many getting buried under the rubble. After that, the children were taken out with the help of the villagers,” an eighth-standard student said.
Meanwhile, five teachers were also suspended on Friday, hours after the accident. A high-level inquiry has been ordered into the incident by the state government.
Rajasthan CM Bhajanlal Sharma also took stock of the situation and expressed condolences over the unfortunate deaths in a video message.
“I am saddened by the death of innocent children in this incident. The state government is with the family members of those who are affected by this… The administration has been directed to provide better treatment for the injured,” he said.
The school building consisted of four classrooms, including the one that collapsed, and was constructed in 1994 by the gram panchayat.
