Celebrities are regularly spotted at the airport before they jet off for work commitments or personal vacations. And like every other place they go to, they make sure to make airport appearances stylish, too. From ethnic to street style, airport fashion has seen it all over the last few decades. But Gen Z is redefining airport chic — keeping the focus on comfort and functionality over looksmaxxing.
Imagine comfy sweatpants, oversized hoodies, and basic tank tops — the younger generation likes to jet off in clothes meant for leisure. Bedroom staples are making it to the runway, and why not? When you have multiple flights to catch in a week, or spend hours killing time at a layover, slipping into tight denims or uncomfortable dresses sounds as appealing as chewing on glass.
If you’re struggling to put together an outfit for your next flight, we have got you covered. Indianexpress.com reached out to a fashion expert, and brought to you some quick and easy suggestions to get out of the ganji-linen pant-hoodie combo and throw together pieces that don’t make you break out in a rash and yet spice up the style quotient.

Tips to keep in mind
Purva Maheshwari, fashion merchandiser, told us that these days, airport fashion usually means hoodies, sweatshirts, sweatpants, and sneakers. Basically, comfort. But travel clothes don’t have to look messy. According to her, you can be comfortable and still look neat without wearing heels or tight suits.
Here are her top tips to ace airport fashion that goes beyond generic athleisure:
- Wear layers since the temperature on planes fluctuates between cold and warm. A light jacket, cardigan, or jacket looks better than a hoodie, and you can take it off when needed.
- Mix things up by trying wide-leg trousers, soft joggers with some shape, or stretchy jeans instead of leggings or track pants. They feel relaxed, and also look cleaner.
- Use useful accessories like a scarf that keeps you warm. Sunglasses cover tired eyes. With a simple tote bag or backpack, you look more complete.
- Keep it simple: no heels, heavy jewelry, or anything that slows you down. Comfort is important, but not too casual.
“Travel style is not about impressing anyone. It’s about wearing clothes that feel like you and are easy to move in,” she concluded.
