One of the first laptops infused with the Copilot + PCs experience, the Asus Vivobook S14 (X1407Q) intends to be your “ultimate work assistant.” Powered by the Snapdragon X1 26 100 processor, the laptop has all the markings of a decent offering: a lengthy battery backup, a solid processor and pleasing design language while accommodating all AI capabilities at a starting price of Rs. 52, 990. Let’s take a deeper look at the key details.
Design
The Asus Vivobook S14 measures 17.9 mm thin in width and weighs 1.49 kgs. The laptop is lightweight for its size and very convenient for regular use. There’s a 180-degree hinge: the smallest hinge compared to competitors in the same size, that can tilt the screen angle at the users’ convenience. The small hinge cap maintains a narrower width for the air outlet in the rear reducing the length by 52% and cutting down the width by 3.4%. The matte finish with the Asus Vivobook logo engraved on the side doesn’t retain fingerprints and has a clean minimalist look that’s also premium.
There are two USB 4 ports that support upto 40 Gbps bandwidth, DisplayPort and Power Delivery. The laptop has a full-sized HDMI 2.1 (TDMS) port, two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports and an audio combo jack, covering an external display, storage devices and the option to expand connections.
Display
The 16-inch Asus FHD+ panel has a 1920×1200 resolution and a 16:10 aspect ratio. The IPS technology means the colours are bright and more accurate indoors as well as in daylight but lacks the deeper contrast that OLED display panels normally used offer. It covers 45% NTSC colour gamut with 300-nit brightness making the laptop perfect for photo editing. However, because of the glow that IPS displays emit during dark visuals means colours don’t necessarily pop as well as on OLED screens.
The standard 60 Hz refresh rate is typically sufficient for general use-cases and provides smooth motion.
Keyboard & Touchpad
The Asus Vivobook S14 has a far more spacious touchpad than the previous models and supports Asus Smart Gesture so it can detect human gestures for actions like adjusting the audio volume, controlling screen brightness and rewinding or fast forwarding through video playback.
The ErgoSense keyboard has a 19.05 mm pitch, which is the distance from the middle of a key to the middle of an adjacent key, making it a comfortable length for people to reach. The backlit keyboard has keys with a subtle indentation that is dish-shaped to guide fingers while the 1.7 mm key travel, which is the longest in this class of laptops, offers better feedback. The form helps users type accurately and comfortably.
Camera
The integrated FHD IR (infrared) camera of the Asus Vivobook is compatible with Microsoft Windows Hello, enabling users to log in to Windows effortlessly with just a glance—even in low-light conditions.
Performance
Packed with the Snapdragon X1 26 100 Processor which runs at up to 2.97 GHz with 8 cores and 8 threads and paired with the Qualcomm Hexagon NPU that delivers up to 45 TOPS, the Asus Vivobook S14 is designed to handle AI tasks and tools for productivity, security, video conferencing and creativity. There’s an updated Micro NPU inside the Qualcomm Sensing Hub that provides enhanced security and helps the laptop restart instantly from sleep mode.
The onboard memory design keeps the chassis thinner and lighter than expected while offering 16 GB capacity and fast 8448 MHz LPDDR5X clock speeds to provide plenty of processing power. The Asus Vivobook S14 has a M.2 slot for storage with 512 GB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD.
Windows and AI
The Vivobook is run by the Windows 24H2 with Copilot for streamlining tasks or assistance with writing and generating images as well as newer but expected AI features like Recall that allows users to take screen grabs and save them so they can search for files, images or websites for references later using simple prompts. Recall also gives the option to delete snapshots. There are also AI features catering to creatives like Cocreator which can transform sketches in Paint into art as well as Generative Fill and Erase in Paint, an NPU-based tool which can make quick edits with prompts easily.
Image Creator generates ideas into images in whatever style users want while Restyle Image which transforms photos into visuals. Additionally, a feature like Click to Do designs a workflow for users by placing an overlay on the screen helping them with a range of tasks like rewriting or editing images or searching or send mails.
The laptop also has AI noise cancelling for clear voice quality during video conferencing. The FHD IR infrared AI camera is also compatible with Microsoft Windows Hello so users can login with a glance.
Additionally, the Vivobook has Asus StoryCube for organising the bank of images and videos more efficiently and helping users import and export easily.
Speakers
The dual speakers with Dolby Atmos support offer clear sound for users as they listen to music, movie or podcasts even in busy surroundings. The volume is slightly restricted but apt for the laptop.
Battery
The laptop has a 50 WHr battery life for both work and gaming. It also supports fast-charging technology with a full charge completed within 30 minutes. The full charge lasted comfortably for the whole work day.
The Vivobook series is generous with connectivity supporting USB-C Easy Charge and a wide range of standard USB-C chargers. There’s also ultrafast charging with any Power Delivery certified charger, including the 65-watt fast charge adapter supplied with the Asus Vivobook series that can boost battery on-the-go with power banks, portable chargers and airline chargers.
Verdict
Overall, the Asus Vivobook S14 is a good middle-of-road product at the starting price of Rs. 52, 990 for multitasking without being overtly flashy. The build is solid while not being too wieldy for daily portability. The AI capabilities make it ideal for working professionals with light editing and writing tasks. Although gamers and video streamers may find the want of a better display due to the lack of an OLED screen, the laptop meets key parameters like providing a robust battery life, a solid design and good performance without comprising much.
