If you’ve ever wanted to just tattoo some hair onto your head, well, you might be on the right track. “Scalp Micro Pigmentation (SMP) is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure designed to give the appearance of fuller hair on the scalp by using micro-needles to deposit pigment into the skin,” said Dr Mandeep Singh, HOD – Plastic, Dermatology, and Cosmetic Surgery at Paras Health, Gurugram.
This technique effectively conceals bald spots and creates the appearance of a natural hairline, making it an excellent option for those with thinning hair or significant hair loss. It can also enhance the results of hair transplant procedures.
Is it the same procedure as tattooing?
The idea of SMP using needles to deposit pigment into the skin can seem very similar to tattooing; however, they differ significantly in both technique and outcome. SMP uses specialised micro-needles that are much finer and more precise than those used in tattooing.
The pigment is deposited at a shallower depth, ensuring it stays sharp and does not spread, resulting in a realistic and natural-looking hairline. Additionally, SMP pigments are specially designed to mimic natural hair colours and gradually fade over time, unlike standard tattoo ink.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy: Stimulates hair growth using the patient’s own blood plasma.
Medications: Medications such as minoxidil and finasteride can also promote hair growth.
