Singer and composer Amaal Mallik recently revealed that he suffers from a sleep-related medical condition. Opening up about the same on Bigg Boss 19, Mallik told actor Gaurav Khanna that he wears a device for breathing hassle-free, as he suffers from sleep apnea. “I snore. I have sleep apnea. I choke. In one minute, I am not breathing for 15-20 seconds while asleep. I tend to choke, and it can be…(threatening),” said Mallik as he wears a CPAP or Continuous Positive Airway Pressure device.
Notably, the device helps blow a gentle stream of air, which helps keep the airway open.
Taking a cue from his admission, let’s understand more about sleep apnea.
Dr Harish Chafle, senior consultant chest physician, bronchoscopist, intensivist, and sleep disorders specialist, Gleneagles Hospitals, Parel, Mumbai, explained that sleep apnea occurs when a person’s breathing stops and starts rapidly during sleep. “In obstructive sleep apnea, the throat muscles tend to relax too much and block the airway, which causes pauses in breathing that can last up to 15–20 seconds or more. When this happens, the body senses the lack of oxygen, and the person may choke, gasp, or wake up suddenly to restart breathing,” said Dr Chafle.
The types of sleep apnea include obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), central sleep apnea (CSA), and mixed/complex sleep apnea.
According to Dr Chafle, sleep apnea can impact the quality of life. “A large number of people suffer from sleep apnea, which can steal their peace of mind. These frequent interruptions disturb sleep, leading to tiredness, morning headaches, poor concentration, and increased risk of heart problems,” said Dr Chafle.
Dr Chafle recommended lifestyle changes, such as maintaining an optimum weight, avoiding alcohol or heavy meals before bedtime, and sleeping on the side instead of the back, which can reduce airway blockage. “Keeping the nose clear of congestion and following a regular sleep routine also helps. However, if symptoms like loud snoring, choking in sleep, or daytime sleepiness persist, consulting a sleep disorders specialist is important for proper diagnosis and treatment,” said Dr Chafle.
Moreover, many, like Mallik, are also advised to use a continuous positive airway pressure device (CPAP), which can help deliver continuous air through the mouth and nose to keep the airways open while you get uninterrupted sleep.
