A hybrid neurosurgical procedure at MGM Malar Hospital successfully removed a large brain tumour in a woman, preventing further neurological deterioration and potential paralysis.
The nine-hour procedure was conducted in two stages. First, a cathlab endovascular intervention blocked the tumour’s blood supply, reducing the risk of heavy bleeding. This was followed by an open microsurgical procedure, performed under a high-powered operating microscope, to safely remove the tumour. The patient had suffered severe headaches for six months, with progressive weakness in her right arm and leg over the last two months. A six-vessel brain angiogram was performed to map the tumour’s vascular supply and plan the operation.
The intervention was led by A. Aravinth Kumar, consultant, Neurosurgery & Endovascular Neuro-Interventions, supported by teams from neuro anaesthesia, interventional anaesthesia, intensive care and neuro-rehabilitation. The patient has made a full recovery.
Dr. Aravinth said timely intervention was crucial, as any delay could have caused irreversible paralysis. He added that persistent headaches or progressive weakness should never be ignored, and people should seek immediate medical attention. Brain tumours in adults are rare, occurring in about 1% of the population, and are usually genetic with unknown causes.
