Kanniyakumari District Collector R. Alagumeena handed over coracles at a 50% subsidised rate for fishing in Pechiparai and Chittar dams.
During the 2024-25 legislative sessions, under the grant request of Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare department, the Fisheries and Animal Husbandry Minister announced that essential fishing equipment would be provided to domestic fishermen at a subsidised rate to support their livelihood.
Accordingly, the department implemented the scheme to distribute coracles at half the cost. Each coracle, worth ₹18,500, was provided at subsidised rate of ₹9,250. A total of 20 fishermen benefitted from the initiative, with 10 beneficiaries each from Pechiparai and Chittar regions.
Ms. Alagumeena said the distribution of coracles would greatly assist fishermen in improving their financial stability.
Chinnakuppan, Deputy Director, Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare, and Virgil Cross, Assistant Director (Nagercoil), Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare, were present.
