People experience various types of stress at different phases of their lives. Dr Munia Bhattacharya, senior consultant, and psychologist, Marengo Asia Hospital, Gurugram said middle-aged people often experience high levels of stress due to health issues, juggling work and family obligations, and having to care for both their elderly parents and children.
“People in their middle years typically have greater expertise managing stress and frequently turn to social support and problem-solving techniques to help them cope. Stress in older individuals is often associated with declining health, bereavement, and financial security concerns. Despite these difficulties, older persons frequently have sophisticated coping mechanisms that make use of their social networks and life experience,” elucidated Dr Bhattacharya.
Experts urge that age and stress have a complex and dynamic relationship that is impacted by social, psychological, and biological factors.
Ageing has an impact on the body’s stress response through hormonal changes (such elevated cortisol levels) and neurological changes (like difficulty managing stress). “Psychologically, older persons tend to be more resilient and have better emotional control, even though they may experience stress differently. It is essential to comprehend these dynamics to create age-appropriate stress management plans,” said Dr Bhattacharya.
According to Dr Sonal Anand, psychiatrist, Wockhardt Hospital Mira Road, even pregnant women are stressed when it comes to their or the baby’s health, during delivery, and taking care of the baby.
So, what can help?
Dr Anand emphasised that it is possible to combat stress with the help of an expert. “It is essential to combat stress by seeking help from an expert who will counsel you regarding the causes and also help with a few coping mechanisms. Don’t let stress take a toll on your well-being. Seeking help at the right time is crucial,” said Dr Anand.

Dr Bhattacharya shared that people should have healthy lifestyles that include frequent exercise, a balanced diet, and enough sleep to stay safe and handle stress. “Deep breathing exercises and other mindfulness and relaxation methods may also be helpful. Maintaining relationships with family and friends and creating robust social support networks are crucial,” said Dr Bhattacharya.
Participating in community events and maintaining an active physical lifestyle might help older persons feel less stressed and more supported. According to Dr Bhattacharya, people can increase their resilience and sustain improved mental and physical health for the duration of their lives by implementing these techniques.
