Many of us silently suffer from gut issues without realising that our lifestyle plays a crucial role in our gut health. But if you wish to make a healthy start today, Harvard-trained gastroenterologist Dr Saurabh Sethi recently listed four beverages that can come to your rescue if you suffer from acid reflux. “Focus on your gut health,” he said in a YouTube Shorts post.
It helps neutralise stomach acid and maintains digestive balance
Fennel seeds water
Rich in compounds like anethol, it has been linked to soothing digestive muscles.
Basil water
Has anti-inflammatory properties that can calm your gut
Coconut water
This beverage is low in acid and can serve as a replacement for sports drinks.
Do these beverages help?
Dr Manish Dodmani, consultant, medical gastroenterology, KIMS Hospitals, Thane, affirmed that to some extent, these drinks can provide relief when consumed in moderation as part of a healthy lifestyle. “Water helps dilute excess stomach acid and flushes the digestive tract. Fennel water possesses natural properties that help relax the gastrointestinal tract and alleviate bloating. Basil water offers mild anti-inflammatory benefits that can ease gastric irritation. Coconut water is alkaline and rich in electrolytes, which helps neutralise acidity while keeping the body hydrated,” said Dr Dodmani.
However, it is essential to remember that while these drinks can help with symptoms, “they don’t address the root cause”. “If acid reflux continues or is severe, it’s essential to consult a gastroenterologist and possibly undergo endoscopy,” stressed Dr Dodmani.

What should you keep in mind while trying these remedies?
*First, portion size and timing matter. Don’t consume too much of any one drink. Sip slowly instead of drinking large amounts quickly. Avoid adding sugar, milk, or artificial flavours, as these could worsen symptoms, said Dr Dodmani.

*Pay attention to how your body reacts. “What helps one person might not help another. For example, while many find coconut water helpful, some may feel discomfort due to its natural sugars. Keeping a food and symptom diary can be useful, especially for noting trigger foods,” said Dr Dodmani.
*It is important to remember that these drinks are only supportive; they should not replace medical advice, especially if you take reflux medication or have been diagnosed with GERD.
Can everyone include these drinks in their diet?
*Generally, yes, but with caution. According to Dr. Dodmani, people with kidney issues should limit their intake of coconut water due to its high potassium content. “Those allergic to herbs should be careful with fennel or basil water,” said Dr Dodmani.
Pregnant women, children, and individuals on diuretics or blood pressure medications should consult a doctor first. “Just because something is safe doesn’t mean it’s right for everyone; personalisation is key for gut health,” said Dr Dodmani.
