OpenAI and Jony Ive’s collaboration on a new AI-powered device has run into technical hurdles as per a report by Financial Times. The gadget which was set to be released in 2026 could potentially be delayed now.
The report revealed that the device was intended to be palm-sized without a screen that can take audio and visual cues from their physical surroundings and then perform tasks based on user requests. However, the team is dealing with challenges around privacy matters, the “personality” of the device and high compute requirements which were pushing budgetary restrictions.
A source told the outlet that the gadget would be have a default switched on approach despite the team not wanting that.
OpenAI had acquired Jony Ive’s hardware startup io for $6.5 billion earlier in May.
Last month, it was reported that OpenAI had signed a deal with Apple supplier Luxshare to manufacture the device.
