Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit the United States next month for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and hold high-level talks with President Donald Trump, India Today reported, citing sources.
PM Modi and Donald Trump are also expected to address trade issues amid a downturn in bilateral ties, the report claimed.
According to The Indian Express, preparations are underway for the Prime Minister’s visit in the last week of September, with the ostensible reason being to attend the UNGA in New York.
However, the key objective is to meet Trump to iron out differences on tariffs and potentially announce a trade deal, it claimed.
(News18 could not independently verify the reports).
The two countries had earlier agreed to work on increasing market access, reducing tariff and non-tariff barriers, and deepening supply chain integration, but negotiations have reportedly hit roadblocks.
As per the Indian Express report, India has already reached out to the UN headquarters to secure a speaking slot for PM Modi, which has been scheduled for the morning of September 26.
Trump is slated to address the UNGA on September 23.
Apart from meeting Trump, PM Modi is also likely to hold meetings with other world leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, India Today reported.
Last year, despite an initial speaking slot being booked in his name, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar represented India at the UNGA in place of the Prime Minister.
Last week, the White House announced an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian imports, taking the total tariff on India to 50 per cent.
The move, Trump said, was in response to India’s continued purchases of Russian oil. The additional tariffs will take effect on August 27.
However, as India remains undeterred, it brushed off what it called a “reckless tariff tirade”.
New Delhi continues to stand by its trade relations with Moscow. At the same time, India is accusing the US of “double standards”.
Despite its tough stance, the US itself continues to import Russian chemicals and fertilisers.
In a surprising twist, on August 6, Donald Trump claimed he had “no knowledge” that the US was still importing such products from Russia. That comment came just after India alleged that the United States continues to import uranium hexafluoride for its nuclear industry, along with fertilisers and other chemicals, all from Russia.
